today – close aqp, wan

AQP close

AQP:  Closed my position in Aquarius Platinum today at 6.10 for an 8% loss.

Well, I certainly seem to be picking some stinkers at the moment!  I just reviewed the entry I made in this blog for the opening – and it sure looked strong.  I think I successfully picked the top 😉  Anyway missed the first day after I triggered the stop loss as I was busy on other things (working on a big project at the real job) so didn’t get to review all my positions the other night.  This was missed, so the sooner I sit down with Amibroker and set up my favorite indicators the better – and not usign many indicators that should be fairly easy.

wan close

WAN:  Closed my position in West Australian News today at 7.65 for a 2% loss.

You can see where the share bounced off my ATR based stop loss a couple of weeks ago, and looked like it might travel up the longer term trendline.  It didn’t and both stops effectively went off about the same time – the break of the rising trend, and the fll through the stop loss.  Anyway closed now, and I’m slowly winding back as we go into the Christmas break.

today – close tol, open aqp

AQP entry

AQP: Opened a position in Aquarius Platinum today at $6.64.

Entered the position is the share has made a new high, and if previous history is anything to go by (and when trading on a technical basis there is nothing else to work with!) this share will be volatile, and can move significant distances rapidly.  In this case I have gone with a stop loss that is spaced a bit further than usual, as I don’t want to get ‘bounced out’.  Lets see how this one goes.

tol close

TOL:  Closed my position in Toll Holdings today at 0.22, for a 10% loss – this was in the warrant tolwmb.

As you can see, the share has bounced off resistance 3 times now, so its hard to say how this share will continue.  For my analysis on entry see my writeup here.  I still have confidence in my original analysis, so I will look into how to continue this trade – subject to conditions of course.  Every trade has to be a discrete event.  I will look at my options around entry based on warrants / options or CFDs – however I wont say much now as I don’t have the time to research this next entry as yet… tomorrow maybe…?

The exit was taken today as the warrant was due to expire in 2 days, and I really don’t want to get caught looking to exercise a warrant.  A 10% loss on a warrant is not bad at all, given the leverage I was playing with.

Remember – stick to your stops!

friday – aqp – chc – fmg – pna

Friday was a busy day for me at work, and as I got home friday night, I found my portfolio had changed shape due to some of the trades I placed earlier.

AQP exit - UGLY!

I closed my position in AQP for a 20% loss – OUCH!  And the graph is ugly.  When I look at it now, after the pain of the loss has past, the price was clearly ranging.  When the share went through my stop loss at ‘1’ I should have exited immediately – instead I held thinking it might recover… big mistake… Never second guess the plan when its in place, take the exit signal when it comes, and re-enter if conditions suit.   Now to go write that out 5 times!  Anyway, learn from it – and move on.

CHC entry

CHC entry

Entered a long CHC position today, and as entries go, I am happy so far.  Pushed through what looks to me like the upper line of a flag on Thursday close, and rose all day friday – and look at the volume.

Having done this for a while, I came to my own personal view some time ago that I can pretty much buy anything – as long as I manage my exit well.  I can get out with a small loss if I enter badly – but keep it to a small loss.  That said, I’m always happy with an entry like the one in the picture… I’ll see how this plays out.

Entered a long FMG position. On close the days trade looks like a spinning top which is disheartening, but does not trigger an immediate exit.  Will keep a close eye.

Exited a long PNA position, but I’ll write this up when I fully exit, as I didn’t fill the order.

System A: Ran my scan – which is designed to run on weekends – still comes up blank!  It still doesn’t like this market.

Final thought for the week – this was an active week, more transacions than I usually like to make in a week, which is making the management of the positions more time consuming.  And it appears that even the professionals struggled with making anything of this week – read what The Kirk report had to say – he’s expecting a bit more to work with next week.
